Q-Tips Maker Relocating Production

March 22, 2000 GMT

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Unilever Home & Personal Care-USA said Wednesday it is relocating production of its Q-Tips cotton swabs to a plant in Puerto Rico, eliminating about 150 jobs here.

But the company also plans to transfer the production of Suave lotions to Jefferson City from its Chicago plant later this year. No permanent jobs will be affected in Chicago, Unilever said.

The Jefferson City facility produces a variety of skin and oral care products, including Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion, Aim and Mentadent.

The transfer of the cotton swab production line should be completed by the end of next year, the company said. The move will consolidate all production of Q-Tips in a factory in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico.

Unilever’s Jefferson City plant opened in 1966 with the manufacture of Q-Tips, and the product line was expanded in later years.

Unilever Home & Personal Care-USA is part of the Anglo-Dutch Unilever group, the third largest consumer products company in the world. It operates in 88 countries with 255,00 employees and annual sales close to $45 billion.
