POWAY, Calif. (AP) — A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy spotted a person in a burning home in the community of Poway early Friday but was unable to reach the victim, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The deputy arrived before firefighters and found the Crocker Road home fully engulfed in flames.

The deputy broke windows to try to locate any occupants.

“The deputy noticed a body lying in a bedroom but was unable to make entry due to smoke and flames. Dialogue was attempted with the victim, but the deputy received no response. Seconds later, the victim’s body was overcome by flames,” a department statement said.
