Florida teacher accused of sexual relationship with boy, 14

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida — A middle school science teacher was arrested Wednesday after an eighth-grade student said he had a sexual relationship with her since November, according to reports.

Stephanie Peterson, 26, also known as Stephanie Ferri, resigned from her job at New Smyrna Beach Middle School and was being held in the Volusia County Jail on a $25,000 bond, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The relationship was revealed after the boy told his parents, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal. The boy was a student in Peterson’s class in seventh grade.

The News-Journal reports an affidavit shows Peterson would send nude photos to the student. She also is accused of picking up the student at his home after her husband left for work and would take him back to her residence to have sex.

She also is accused of giving the boy marijuana, clickorlando.com reports.

The News-Journal reports Ferri filed for divorce from her husband on Feb. 12. The couple were married Dec. 5, 2015.

Peterson had told the boy not to tell anyone about the relationship, saying they could get in trouble, reports say.

Officials say the boy’s grades started to fall after the relationship began.

“They put them in situations where they gain their trust, they gain their confidence and then here you go again,” Sheriff Mick Chitwood tells clickorlando.com. “You have another person who’s in a position of power, who abuses that power and is abusing a young student.”

Peterson aces two counts of lewd or lascivious battery and one count of transmission of harmful materials to a minor.
