MU roundup: Herd softball splits pair in tourney
CLEARWATER, Fla. — South Florida’s Georgina Corrick pitched a five-hitter to beat Marshall, 5-1, in a Friday softball game of the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational.
Marshall scored in the fourth inning when Armani Brown singled and was driven in by Blakely Burch with a double.
The Thundering Herd won its first game Friday against Oakland, 5-2, with Ali Burdette pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief to get the win. Marshall catcher Taylor McCord cracked a home run and second baseman Elicia D’Orazio was 2 for 4 and stole two bases.
Burdette and starting pitcher Kailee Williamson combined to scatter four hits.
The Herd (2-4) continues in the tournament Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Missouri and 5:30 p.m. against UMass-Lowell.
Baseball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Marshall hit four home runs and defeated Florida A&M 17-5 to open the Herd baseball season Friday at Moore-Kittles Field. Details about the game were not available on either school’s website at press time.
The teams play again at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Track and field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Marshall women’s track and field athletes compete Saturday and Sunday at the C-USA indoor championships in the Birmingham CrossPlex. Competition both days begins at 10 a.m.
Marshall’s seventh-place finish last year was its highest ever.
Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville (9-1), out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, blanked Marshall women’s tennis 5-0 in a Friday match at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Marshall (0-7) forfeited points at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles because of injuries.
The Thundering Herd moves to Hamilton, Ohio, for a 2:30 p.m. Saturday match against Miami (Ohio) at the Riverside Athletic Club.
