10 local football players named to All-Northern Section team
The All-Northern Section football team was released on Wednesday, and a total of 10 local standouts earned spots among the section’s best in a vote compiled by media members from the Appeal-Democrat, Chico Enterprise-Record, Redding Record Searchlight and MaxPreps.
Topping the list of those earning all-section honors was Sutter High defensive end Tyler Gillming, who was voted by media outlets as the section’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Gillming, the Butte View League’s Defensive MVP, finished his senior year with 77 tackles to go with team highs of 21 tackles for loss and 11 acks. Gillming was voted to the second team last season, and joins former Husky linebackers Logan Hungrige (2016), Ryan Staas (2012) and Ben Turner (1999) as Sutter players to take home the section’s defensive MVP award.
Joining Gillming on the first team were two offensive teammates in senior quarterback Tyler Reynolds and senior running back Trever Facey.
Reynolds, the BVL’s Offensive MVP, was voted as the first-team quarterback after leading the Northern Section in total yardage by passing for 2,587 yards and 24 touchdowns to go with an additional 970 yards and 11 scores scores on the ground.
Facey became the first player in section history to top 1,000 yards in both rushing and receiving, and was named to the first team as an all-purpose player. He finished the year with 1,797 yards rushing and 1,034 yards receiving while scoring 28 total touchdowns.
Both Reynolds and Facey were second-team selections last year.
Also making the first team were East Nicolaus seniors Corey Taylor and Christian Hovey, who shared Mid-Valley League MVP honors this fall.
Taylor was named to the first team as a defensive back after recording 80 tackles and four interceptions at corner. He also was the Spartans’ top offensive weapon at running back, where he rushed for 1,235 yards to go with 14 touchdowns.
Hovey was named to the first team as a defensive tackle after finishing with 97 tackles, 12 for tackles for loss and 4 acks.
Earning spots on the section’s second team were Gridley quarterback Jace Villapania, Gridley wide receiver Nika McCracken, Pierce quarterback Dutch Kalfsbeek, Sutter offensive lineman Tommy Alexander and Sutter defensive tackle Travis Tedder.
Villapania spearheaded a turnaround season for the Bulldogs by passing for 1,592 yards and 17 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,077 yards and 18 more scores as a dual-threat quarterback. Many of his passes headed in the direction of McCracken, who hauled in 37 receptions for 776 yards and eight touchdowns.
Kalfsbeek, who was voted as the Sacramento Valley League’s Offensive MVP, was also quite the dual threat at quarterback and was named the second team’s all-purpose player. Kalfsbeek finished the year with 831 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air to go with 1,040 yards and 18 TDs on the ground to lead the Bears to a league title.
Alexander, the Huskies’ center, was the top lineman on a powerful Sutter offense that finished second in the section in scoring. Tedder, a junior, earned a spot on the second team on defense after recording 67 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 6 acks.
Shasta’s Vincent Smith was voted the Northern Section’s Offensive MVP and Shasta’s JC Hunsaker was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Wolves to the Division II title and a win in their CIF NorCal bowl game.
