Memphis mayor tests positive for COVID-19

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Strickland, who is vaccinated, said in a social media post he is experiencing mild congestion but otherwise is feeling well.

“I’m thankful for being vaccinated,” Strickland tweeted Friday. ”...Over 90% of Memphians being hospitalized are not vaccinated. Please get your vaccine.”

He will be isolating and conducting city business electronically, The Commercial Appeal reported.

According to the CDC, some vaccine breakthrough cases like Strickland’s are expected, since no vaccine is 100% effective at preventing illness. New U.S. studies released Friday show the COVID-19 vaccines remain highly effective against hospitalizations and death.
