Rutgers board votes to merge 2 nursing schools

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The Rutgers University Board of Governors has approved merging two nursing programs despite questions from union officials about the implications for employees.

The new Rutgers School of Nursing will launch July 1. It combines the Rutgers College of Nursing, which operates in Newark and New Brunswick, and the School of Nursing in Newark.

The state university also plans to merge its nursing programs in Camden and Stratford, though that was not part of the action approved Tuesday.

The mergers are part of reorganizing that continues after Rutgers absorbed most of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey last year.

Representatives of two Rutgers employee unions and the faculty senate said they wanted more details on the impact on employees at the schools.
