Suspect charged in hit-and-run death of former Roma High School basketball player
McALLEN — A Mission man has been charged in the fatal hit-and-run early Saturday morning that killed a Roma man in downtown McAllen.
Leonel Adame Martinez, 29, was booked in the Hidalgo County Jail Saturday evening on one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and another count of accident involving death, both of which are a second degree felony.
Martinez’s car struck Kevin Andrade, 21, at the intersection of 15th Street and West U.S. Business Highway 83 around 2:20 a.m. on July 15, said Lt. Joel Morales, a spokesperson for the McAllen Police Department. Andrade later died at a local hospital.
Andrade graduated from Roma High School in 2014, where he played basketball all four years.
“He represented the school with the way he played, his work ethic, being a role model to younger kids,” said Luis Ramirez, the men’s basketball head coach, who served as assistant coach during Andrade’s time on the team.
“He hated to lose with a passion,” Ramirez said of Andrade, who began playing basketball as a child.
Martinez fled the scene of the collision, and McAllen Police officers located him later Saturday morning, Morales said.
Martinez is being held on a $120,000 bond.
