Vermont parents arrested in death of their 1-month-old child
ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — The parents of a 1-month-old who died in August were arrested Wednesday by Vermont State Police.
Leo Cushing died Aug. 1 in Swanton inside the home he shared with his parents. An autopsy concluded that the cause of death was a subdural hemorrhage to the brain and indicated a homicide, state police said.
The investigation determined that Stephanie Gero, 28, caused injuries to Leo prior to his death and that Leo’s father, Matthew Cushing, 36, was aware Gero was prohibited from being alone with the infant, but that he allowed her to be with her son unsupervised while he was taking a shower, police said.
Gero faces a charge of first-degree aggravated domestic assault, and cruelty to a child with death resulting. She is scheduled for arraignment Thursday afternoon. Cushing faces a charge of cruelty to a child with death resulting and was processed and released on a citation to appear in court Dec. 22.
Gero was ordered jailed on $25,000 bail pending her arraignment.
It was unclear Wednesday whether Gero and Cushing have attorneys.
