DA releases name of Hampshire County homicide victim
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Authorities on Friday released the name of the victim in Hampshire County’s first homicide of the year.
Joseph Fillio, 39, of Pittsfield, died after being shot in the head in a Northampton apartment at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the office of Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan.
The suspect, Steven J. Malloy, 32, was held without bail after pleading not guilty to murder and other charges at his arraignment Thursday. An email seeking comment was left with his attorney.
Police who were called to the scene by a bystander found Fillio on the floor suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect was not in the apartment, but witnesses identified him as Malloy, and said he had fled the area on foot, prosecutors said. He was located and arrested a short time later.
