Southwest Houston athletes take gold at Texas Relays

April 2, 2017 GMT

The southwest side of the Greater Houston area produced several exceptional performances at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, March 29-April 1 at the University of Texas’ Mike A. Myers Stadium. Competing with many of the state’s best at the prestigious invitational event, George Ranch, Katy, Hightower and Strake Jesuit brought home gold medals.

Hightower’s Gabriel Oladipo set a new stadium record in the discus, heaving 205 feet, 1 inch to break the mark of 204-3 set last year. The Hurricanes standout also took third in a stacked shot put field, throwing 62-9 for the bronze medal.

Katy’s girls distance runners continued to excel, winning two relays. The team of Audrey Witham, Abigail Brudnick, Mallory Morgan and Brooke Lomax finished the 3,200-meter relay in 9 minutes, 15.70 seconds for the championship. Olivia Einarsson joined Lomax, Morgan and Brudnick for more gold and a time of 12:04.05 in the distance medley relay.

George Ranch sprinted to the 800-meter relay championship as Sebastian Arellano, Jayson Baldridge, Avery Veiseh and Champion Allison clocked a 1:24.47. The Longhorns also won the bronze medal in the mile relay, indicating they could be back in Austin in May for the UIL state meet.

Strake Jesuit brought home the 3,200-meter relay title, with Will Hartwig, Alex Mills, Jeffrey Price and Jason Bugg running a 7:50.90. The Crusaders also ran to bronze in the sprint medley relay.

Standout performances at the Texas Relays included a silver medal and meet record from Tompkins’ Katelyn Anderson, who surpassed the javelin stadium record with a throw of 134-3. Local silver medalists included Lamar’s girls sprint medley relay and distance runner Julia Heymach, Foster’s boys 3,200-meter relay, St. John’s boys 400-meter relay and Seven Lakes thrower Cooper Campbell.
