Wheeler, Shears lead Boyd County past Huntington St. Joe

SUMMIT, Ky. — Savannah Wheeler and Payton Shears scored 21 points apiece Saturday as Boyd County defeated Huntington St. Joe 76-63 in a battle of girls high school basketball area powers at Boyd County Middle School.

Harley Paynter scored 18 points for the Lions (11-2). Dena Jarrells and Paige Shy paced the Irish (6-3) with 13 points apiece. Bailee Adkins scored 12.

HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 16 11 16 20 — 63: Adkins 12, Whitmore 8, Hunter 5, Jarrell’s 13, Kay 5, Ellison 7, Shy 13.

BOYD COUNTY 24 14 14 24 — 76: C. Shears 7, Wheeler 21, Rucker 2, G. Borders 7, Paynter 18, P. Shears 21.

RACELAND 55, FAIRVIEW 45: Morgan Curley scored 13 points and Lauren Runyon 12 as the Rams (6-9) defeated the Eagles (5-9) at Raceland, Ky. Jordan Rakes scored 19 for Fairview.

Boys

HURRICANE 60, WINFIELD 58: Steven Shine hit a jump shot with four seconds to play to give Hurricane (5-4) a 60-58 victory over arch-rival Winfield (6-2) Saturday night in boys high school basketball.

The Generals missed a 3-point shot at the final buzzer.

Nick Muto paced Hurricane with 18 points. Austin Dearing and Jordan Nicely both scored 12.

Braeden McGrew led Winfield with 16 points. Andrew Huff and Kolbe Rogers scored 13 apiece.

SYMMES VALLEY 68, FAIRVIEW 58: Layden Gothard scored 19 points Jack Leith 12 points to lead the Vikings (6-4) o we the Eagles in Willow Wood, Ohio.

Austin Mannon scored 14 points and Nick Klaiber 10. Brock Carpenter grabbed 13 rebounds.

Fairview (5-8) was led by Ethan Smithers with 17 points. Noah King scored 15 and Garrett Greene 12.

WHEELERSBURG 46, IRONTON 30: The Pirates (7-1) jumped to a 14-2 lead on their way to a victory over the Fighting Tigers (3-7) in Wheelersburg, Ohio.

Tanner Holden led Wheelersburg with 17 points and seven rebounds. Reid Carrico scored 10 points and snatched eight rebounds for Ironton.

IRONTON ST. JOE 53, PORTSMOUTH CLAY 36: Chase Walters scored 22 points and Joey McDavid 19 as the Flyers (9-2) beat the Panthers (1-9) at Ironton High School’s Conley Center.

Garrett Beegan led Clay with 13 points

SIMON KENTON 77, JOHNSON CENTRAL 63: Freshman Kelly Niece pumped in 26 points Saturday in a Marvin Meredith Classic victory at Russell. Zach Kelch added 18 for the Pioneeers (9-4).

Johnson Central (8-7) had Jacob Rice with 24 points and Cory VanHoose with 14.
