Snow shortage hinders trail grooming, ice rinks

December 15, 2017 GMT

With limited snowfall and warm temperatures, Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation cannot yet begin to groom trails or open ice rink openings.

“As we continue to experience a very dry early season we appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we wait for Mother Nature to provide adequate snow cover to begin grooming operations,” a public service announcement from the department read.

Currently no trails are being groomed. Cache Creek and Game Creek areas will come online prior to any other trails in the valley unless significant snow arrives and allows Parks and Rec to open everything, according to Teton County information officer Billy Kirk.

Ice rinks at Alta, Powderhorn Park and Wilson all lack enough snow for a base on which to lay down ice. An ice base without snow cover has been started at the Jackson Rodeo Grounds, and Parks and Rec anticipates opening that rink by Dec. 23.

Typically these operations are up and running by mid-December.
