Bond denied for Edgefield County man charged with murder

June 21, 2018 GMT

On Wednesday morning, an Aiken County magistrate judge denied bond for an Edgefield County man charged in the death of 20-year-old Melissa Clary.

James Michael Hooper II, 21, of North Augusta in the Edgefield County area, is charged with murder, jail records show.

The magistrate judge said Hooper’s first hearing will be on Aug. 3, 2018.

On June 11, deputies responded to Clary’s home on Fir Street in North Augusta, after her mother found her unresponsive and called 911.

An autopsy was performed June 12 on Clary’s body, and it was determined she died from blunt-force trauma to the head and strangulation, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Police discovered Hooper had an on-again, off-again relationship with Clary, and they had a child together.

Following an investigation, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office determined Hooper had something to do with Clary’s murder and obtained a warrant for his arrest on Tuesday.

Hooper turned himself in to police on Tuesday afternoon and was taken to the Aiken County detention center, where he will continue to be held after being denied bond.
