Authorities: Inmate assaults detention deputy at Kansas jail
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A detention deputy was assaulted Tuesday by an inmate at the Sedgwick County jail, sustaining multiple facial fractures, authorities said.
The deputy was attempting to get the inmate to return to a cell at about 2:40 a.m. after he had been let out to shower, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The inmate made threatening comments, prompting the deputy to call for help while continuing efforts to get the inmate to return to his cell.
Authorities said the inmate then struck the deputy in the face with a closed fist at least twice, knocking him to the floor. The deputy received 15 stitches. He was treated at a hospital and released.
The inmate, who has been in custody since May 2020, is being held on charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and battery of a law enforcement officer.
