Man accused of kidnapping son now charged with mom’s murder
RAHWAY, N.J. (AP) — A man accused of kidnapping his toddler son has now been charged with murder in the death of the boy’s mother, authorities announced Thursday.
Tyler Rios, 27, of Highland Park, was arrested Saturday in Tennessee. His son, 2-year-old Sebastian Rios, was the subject of an Amber Alert on Friday after he wasn’t taken to day care and his 24-year-old mother, Yasemin Uyar of Rahway, did not arrive for her scheduled work shifts.
The boy was found unharmed early Saturday in Monterey, Tennessee, when Rios was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping. Uyar’s body was found later that day in a wooded area off an interstate in Tennessee, authorities have said.
It’s still unclear where and exactly when Uyar was killed, and additional information about her death was not disclosed Thursday when the murder charge was announced by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
Tyler Rios remains in custody in Tennessee pending extradition back to New Jersey, and it’s not clear whether he has retained an attorney.
Uyar’s mother has said her daughter was a doting mother who struggled in an abusive relationship. On Facebook, she has said the family grieves her loss but doesn’t want her remembered solely as a victim.
