Las Vegas police fatally shoot suspected kidnapped
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at officers Tuesday after he forcibly entered an apartment and kidnapped an ex-girlfriend, police said.
The officers responded to reports of shots fired east of North Las Vegas near East Lake Mead Boulevard at about 9 a.m. and learned the suspect had fled the area with the woman and a gun, Capt. Carlos Hank said.
They located them about two hours later walking near a shopping complex a few miles away where the man started holding the woman hostage at gun point, police said in a statement.
“The officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and get the suspect to release the female,” Hank told reporters. “Ultimately, the suspect pointed his firearm at officers and officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.”
Police said in a statement later Tuesday one officer fired at the suspect, striking him.
No one else was injured.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Hank said. His name has not been released.
The officer-involved shooting is under investigation, Hank said. It’s the eighth involving the department this year.
