Some Vermont communities to ponder local marijuana sales

January 30, 2021 GMT

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Voters in a number of Vermont communities are going to be deciding on Town Meeting Day whether they would like to host businesses that sell recreational marijuana.

Among the communities that will be considering the issue are Winooski, Bennington, Pownal, Lyndon and St. Johnsbury.

The Vermont Legislature has legalized the sale of recreational marijuana starting next year, but cities and towns have to vote whether to allow sales within their borders.

Recreational marijuana has been legal since 2018, but there has been no mechanism for the sale or taxation of the substance.

Approval by communities would allow businesses to seek a state license to sell or cultivate cannabis, beginning in 2022. A state board would then review and approve license requests.
