Beaver Dam AM Kiwanis Adult Spelling Bee raises $1,472
Seven teams entered the third annual Adult Spelling Bee competition Feb. 19 held by Beaver Dam AM Kiwanis.
The event, which netted $1,472 for People Against a Violent Environment (PAVE) and Clothes For Kids, filled the Chapel of the Archangels with laughter as both correct and creative spelling was heard during the entire two hours.
The traveling trophy was won by Wayland’s “Bee Different” team consisting of Linda Lutes, Linda Tyranski and Elise Krause who correctly spelled mastoidectomy (a surgical procedure). They had stiff competition from the runner up Beaver Dam Rotary team of Kathy Helm, Dale Schmidt and Pam Harkema who misspelled “accelerometer.”
The word clerestory eliminated the “Saintly Spellers” team, members of the Clothes For Kids board of directors, in the 12th round. They were by far the most creative spellers relying on “legal cheats” to continue in competition. When the Saintly Spellers correctly spelled amethyst other teams in the competition cheered.
The Saintly Spellers, costumed in nuns’ costumes, won both the Best Team Costume and Best Team Name. Bee Ballots cast by the audience and team members determined the winner.
Excellent spelling was heard from the Beaver Dam Exchange Club team, the Dodge County Bar Team “The Trumps,” the “Volunteers” from the Beaver Dam Hospital Partners group, and the “Lucky Bee-vers” from CHS and Chippy’s.
The acting Judge was Mike Wissell. Wissel liberally fined Kiwanians and audience members raising more funds for PAVE and Clothes For Kids.
