DeKalb County Spelling Bee to be held Saturday
The annual Daily Chronicle/DeKalb County Regional Office of Education Regional Spelling Bee will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Kishwaukee College Theatre.
Twenty local school winners will compete for the championship. Spellers are:
• Bryanna Sonntag and Sean Abracia-Wendel, Genoa-Kingston Middle School
• Josephine Wilson and Rachel Diaz, Indian Creek Middle School
• Chandler Fruit and Kaylee Bottom, Hiawatha Junior High School
• Susana Martin and Daniel Martin, Sycamore Middle School
• Kaitlin Haley, Clinton Rosette Middle School
• Nolan Bunger, Huntley Middle School
• Ben Jourdan and Kayleigh McReynolds, Hinckley-Big Rock Middle School
• Michelle Quinones and Sydney Van Conant, Sandwich Middle School
• Madeline Short and Evelyn Hentschel, Somonauk Middle School
• Magnus Keswani and Nicholas Kijowski, St. Mary School – Sycamore
• Levi Thompson and Lillian Schatteman, St. Mary School – DeKalb
The spelling champion will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., provided by the Daily Chronicle to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
Other champion prizes include a one-year subscription to Britannica Online Premium donated by Encyclopedia Britannica, a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online Dictionary courtesy of Merriam-Webster, the Samuel Louis Sugarman Certificate Award (a 2017 United States Mint Proof Set) donated by Jay Sugarman and a $25 Amazon gift card.
The runner-up will receive a Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, donated by Merriam-Webster and a $25 Amazon gift card.
