Louisiana prison rodeo canceled, again, due to pandemic

ANGOLA, La. (AP) — For the second year in a row, the annual rodeo of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The state corrections department announced the decision Wednesday.

The rodeo and an accompanying arts and crafts fair had been slated for each weekend in October.

The department news release said the rodeo has grown in popularity since it first started in 1965. The arena for the rodeo now can hold as many as 10,000 people.

The department said it was canceling the rodeo for the health and safety of prisoners and staff as a fourth surge of COVID-19 grips the state. The release said the penitentiary staff will contact those who had already bought tickets to issue refunds.
