Fishing boat rescues man in water after bridge accident
PLAQUEMINE, La. (AP) — One person was rescued from Atchafalaya River Basin waters in south Louisiana after a Friday morning accident on an Interstate 10 bridge in Iberville Parish.
Major Monty Migliacio of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office told Louisiana news outlets that the man was in the water for a little over 20 minutes before a fishing boat rescued him from waters beneath the span.
“They were in the right place at the right time,” Migliacio told The Advocate, which reported that the victim survived a fall of more than 40 feet.
Acadian Ambulance said in a news release that it transported four people to hospitals from the scene, two by air and two on the ground. WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge reported that the man who fell from the interstate and one other person were listed in serious condition.
Early reports indicate that a car had stalled around 10 a.m. Friday on the interstate and was on the shoulder when another vehicle rammed it. The impact sent the man over the side of the bridge and into the water. It was not immediately clear whether he was in the car when the accident happened.
The accident happened in the eastbound lane and prompted officials to divert eastbound traffic for part of the day to Interstate 49 northbound to US Hwy 190 eastbound. There was a backup of several miles until after the accident scene was cleared.
Authorities were investigating the accident and had not reported any charges or citations as of Friday afternoon.
