LC Squeaks Out Win in Opener

Luke McFadyen had 29 assists in his setting debut to power the Lowell Catholic boys volleyball team to a season-opening 3-2 win over Doherty.

Scores were 25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 15-11.

The Indians swept past Malden, 25-13, 25-12, 25-11, while winning their season-opening match.


Timmy Smiligis, Jeff Davis and Ankeet Patel chipped in with 4 kills each.

Will Scott pocketed a pair of goals and Brandon Witherell made 6 saves to fuel the victory for the Tigers.

Chris Berger contributed a goal and 2 assists, while Ben Canfield, Danny Angell and Gavin Bergeron added a goal each.

Westford 10

Chelmsford 9

The Grey Ghosts nipped Chelmsford in a non-league thriller decided in overtime.

Matt Curran led Westford with 2 goals and 2 assists. Jason Bunyon and Matt Sepe added 2 goals and an assist each. Cam Barisano chipped in 2 goals, including the winning tally three minutes into OT.

Adding a goal each for WA were John Alfano and Nick Antes. Craig Tucker made 7 saves.

Chelmsford led 4-2 at halftime.

Lowell 8

Jack Frediani paced Lowell’s offense with 4 goals in this non-league loss to Peabody.

Brendan Tighe 2 goals fired in 2 goals, while Owen Goulette and Nick Mandeville potted 1 goal each.

Evan DeFranzo added 1 assist for Lowell (1-1).

Andew Carrabis made 6 saves in goal for the Red Raiders.

Senior Emily Jussaume led the way with 8 goals and 2 assists as Lowell Catholic topped AMSA in its season opener.

Senior Ali Dresser potted 3 goals and dished our 4 assists, while Caitie Heise tallied 2 goals. Patricia Adesanya, Cassidy Gilbride and Anaiyah Rivera netted 1 goal each.

Morgan Bellavance dished out 1 assist. Abbey Keefe made 8 saves in goal.

The Vikings dropped their season-opening game in Westford, as Nashoba Tech couldn’t stop Assabet’s Justice Bates, who had 4 goals.

Despite solid offensive efforts from four players, the Tigers were defeated in Shrewsbury.
