Bids sought for West Ludington Avenue improvements

August 26, 2018 GMT

The City of Ludington is requesting contractor bids for the construction of improvements to the area on Ludington Avenue west of Stearns Drive.

The project will reconstruct the area to be more “multiuse” and better suited for pedestrians and for hosting events, said Heather Tykoski, City of Ludington community development director.

New sidewalks and pavement will be added, including a promenade equipped to hold temporary event tents and a sunset viewing area. Benches and native plants will also be located throughout the space.

“It’s finally being able to beautify the area and make it more usable for the public,” Tykoski said.

Events like the Hospital Gala and the Ludington Lighthouse Triathlon have been held at the location for many years, she noted.

“There’s a ton of different things that happen in that space and the potential for more,”she added.

Tykoski said that currently the asphalt needs repair, which is problematic for events. Plus, the sidewalk dead-ends at the intersection of West Ludington Avenue and Stearns Drive, which impacts the pedestrian traffic flow from Waterfront Park to Stearns Park, she said.

“It’s a very unsafe intersection as it stands now,” she said. “It kind of dissects the waterfront walkway loop.”

A goal of the project is to make the sidewalks along the shore more continuous, she said.

The project will also include shortening the parking area on West Ludington Avenue, but the parking on Stearns Drive will not be impacted. People can also still park for free at the Loomis Street Boat Launch.

“We will preserve some (parking) for accessibility and events,” Tykoski said. “There will be some parking, but it won’t go as far west as it does now.”
