Mallards beat Battle Creek, extend winning streak to seven

June 10, 2018 GMT

Right-hander Ryan Kutt threw five scoreless innings and the Madison Mallards, who staked him to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, rolled to a 6-1 victory over the Battle Creek Bombers in a Northwoods League amateur baseball game Saturday night at Warner Park.

The first-place Mallards (9-3) won their seventh straight game, adding three runs in the fourth inning against the last-place Bombers (2-9), who Madison beat 7-6 on Friday.

“I gave up more hits than I wanted to, a lot of infield hits, little dinkers into the outfield. But I knew that my stuff was good today and that if I pounded the zone, I was going to get guys out,” Kutt said. “We had great defense behind me and I just had to let them do the work.”

The Mallards, who own the league’s best overall record, lead the South Division by one game over the Kalamazoo Growlers.

The effort by Kutt, a freshman right-hander at the University of Illinois, came one day after Illin teammate Sean Leland held Battle Creek to one run in five innings.

Mallards designated hitter Tyler Plantier collected three hits and knocked in a run.

Madison left fielder Drew Obercontributed both offensively and defensively, robbing a Battle Creek batter of a home run and collecting two hits and an RBI.

The Mallards host the Kenosha Kingfish to wrap up a three-game weekend homestand. Today’s game is scheduled to get underway at 4:05 and will feature the Festival Foods TJ Watt bobblehead giveaway.
