Police: Some at large gathering shot fireworks at officers
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Some people at a large gathering Monday shot fireworks at police officers who were trying to disperse the event, according to the Portland Police Department.
When officers responded to reports of a crowd of 300 people and fireworks being fired near a park on Monday evening, some people shot the fireworks at them, WMTW-TV reported.
“Such unruly and dangerous aggression and use of force against our officers and community cannot and will not be tolerated,” said Chief Frank Clark in a statement posted Tuesday on Facebook.
Police arrested a 17-year-old and charged him with disorderly conduct and criminal use of explosives.
Just after midnight, police received a report of gunshots and an officer saw someone fire multiple shots a short time later in the same neighborhood, police said.
Police are investigating the gun shots and the firing of fireworks at officers.
