FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida jail inmate was captured following a car chase about a day after escaping from a medical facility, authorities said.

Davie police spotted a stolen car driven by Azmi Mahmoud, 46, Wednesday afternoon, according to a Broward Sheriff’s Office news release. The vehicle had been reported stolen during a carjacking that morning in Hollywood.

The pursuit crossed into several jurisdictions, eventually leading south to Miami-Dade County, officials said. Mahmoud was eventually stopped in Opa Locka.

Mahmoud managed to leave a Henderson Behavioral Health facility undetected Tuesday evening, investigators said. Officials didn’t say how he escaped. He had been transferred there from the Broward County jail following a court order.

Mahmoud was arrested in November. He was being held without bond for violating probation on charges including battery, grand theft and drug possession.

Jail records didn’t list an attorney for Mahmoud.
