STRATFORD — The U.S. Coast Guard said the search for a possible missing person in the water in Stratford turned out to be a pool toy and a Mylar balloon.

Several crews responded to an area in Stratford on a report of a possible missing person in the water Wednesday evening, according to the Coast Guard.

Stratford police sent a post out on Twitter at 6:50 p.m. that said the Stratford police and fire departments, police and fire departments of neighboring towns and the U.S. Coast Guard were actively searching for a possible missing person.

The Coast Guard said the rescue teams found what was described as a pool toy with a pink mermaid’s tail on it and a Mylar balloon, which was mistaken as a person from shore.

The Coast Guard continued to search the waters in the area for about an hour to be safe.
