Multi-vehicle crash kills 2 people, injures 5 in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The driver of the semi involved in a eight-vehicle crash that killed two people and injured at least five others has been arrested on two counts of motor vehicle homicide, the Nebraska State Patrol said Sunday.
The crash happened at about 9:25 a.m. Saturday on westbound Interstate 80 near the 27th Street interchange in Lincoln, Nebraska, authorities said in a news release. All the vehicles involved were westbound at the time of the crash.
A preliminary investigation has determined that the semi rear-ended one vehicle east of of the interchange. It then continued westbound for more than a mile and struck several other passenger vehicles west of the interchange. Authorities identified the semi driver as Yorkwind Crawford, 50, of North Miami Beech, Florida.
A father and and his young son who were traveling together in a Chevrolet Colorado pickup were killed. They were identified Sunday as Mark Kaipust, 41, and Taylor Kaipust, 7, of La Vista, Nebraska.
Five other people were transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Investigators say they believe speed and inattention were the primary causes of the crash.
