Calvin R. McBride
Calvin Ray McBride, 78, of Fairbury was born to Oliver Herbert McBride and Ella Mae Ahrens McBride on January 24, 1940 in Brewster, Nebraska. He passed away August 30, 2018 at the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury.
Calvin joined the Navy in June of 1959 and served during the Vietnam War. He was transferred to reserve in May of 1963 as a Commandant, Ninth Naval District Great Lakes in Illinois. Calvin was honorably discharged in Charleston, SC in June of 1965.
Calvin was a member of the American Legion Club – Ainsworth, NE and the Eagles Club in Beatrice, NE.
He was a truck driver for over 30 years, driving for Holtmeier Trucking, Sunflower, Crete Carrier and Biba Construction. He also worked at G & M Oil in Beatrice. Calvin lived in Ainsworth, Brewster, Beatrice, Harbine, Plymouth, Homesville and Fairbury, retiring in 1999.
He was admitted to the Heritage Care Center in Fairbury on June 27, 2016.
Calvin truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; taking his dog, Romie, for rides and to get ice cream, driving to the countryside to stop in and visit with an old friend or a family member, and he loved spending time with the children in the family.
Calvin will always be remembered for his love of family, being a loyal friend, his great sense of humor, and his generosity to others.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John McBride; and sister, Bonnie Irwin.
He is survived by brothers, Mort McBride (Carol) of Ainsworth, Bruce McBride (Betty) of Lincoln, Ernest McBride of Plymouth, Victor McBride (Betty) Ainsworth; and sister, Beverly Dodds of Manhattan, KS.
A Family Graveside Service with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, at Prairie Home Cemetery in Diller with Pastor Darlene Novotny officiating. Memorials established to the families choice. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
