State Supreme Court says Bob Krist’s name can stay on ballot

State Sen. Bob Krist’s name will appear on the Democratic gubernatorial primary ballot in May after a ruling from the Nebraska Supreme Court.

Fellow Democratic candidate Tyler Davis had challenged Krist’s ability to appear on the ballot based on a law that says a candidate’s change in party must be done before the first Friday in December of the previous year.

Krist switched his party affiliation from Republican to nonpartisan last year. Then in February he registered as a Democra t and formally declared his gubernatorial candidacy.

Secretary of State John Gale had said that Krist’s February switch was the declaration of a political party, not a switch from one party to another.

Chief Justice Mike Heavican affirmed Gale’s decision in a March 19 opinion.
