10 NFL players protest during national anthem

As the debate over whether the NFL should have a national anthem policy, a small number of players protested during the playing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” in Week 1.

Not including the double-header of “Monday Night Football,” two players Miami’s Kenny Stills and Albert Wilson took a knee, while others raised a fist, sat or remained in the locker room.

In total, 10 players across six teams took part in some sort of a protest. Denver’s Demaryius Thomas and Brandon Marshall and Seattle’s Duane Brown and Quinton Jefferson remained in the locker room.

San Francisco’s Marquise Goodwin, Los Angeles’ Russell Okung and Miami’s Robert Quinn each held up a fist during the national anthem.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Michael Bennett was the only player to sit on the bench during the playing of the anthem.

Players have said they are protesting racial inequality.

ESPN reported Sunday the NFL is not expected to reach an agreement on a new national anthem policy this season.
