Brooks Koepka has won his first PGA Championship, playing poised and mistake-free golf down the stretch amid ear-splitting roars for Tiger Woods and a late charge from a revitalized Adam Scott. The U.S. Open champion closed with a 4-under 66 to reach 16 under for the tournament. That left Koepka three shots clear of Scott and two ahead of Woods, whose Sunday charge electrified the packed grounds of Bellerive Country Club as if it were a decade ago. Woods capped a 6-under 64 with a long birdie putt at the 18th, pumping his fist as if he had won. It was the four-time PGA champion’s lowest final round in a major. Meanwhile, the unflappable Koepka became the fifth player to win the U.S. Open and the PGA in the same year. The others are Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.
The Chicago Cubs extended their National League Central Division lead over Milwaukee with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals last night. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth with two out, pinch hitter David Bote smashed a grand slam against reliever Ryan Madson. Bote’s long drive to center field came after Washington’s Max Scherzer and Chicago’s Cole Hamels delivered simply dominant starts. The Cubs are four games up on the Brewers.
Sometimes getting vocal leadership from a player is better than instruction from a coach. Ryan Tannehill showed a surprise glimpse of that midway through the Dolphins’ practice yesterday when the QB yelled at rookie Kalen Ballage and kicked him out of the huddle after the running back missed a blocking assignment that resulted in a clean sack by Charles Harris. ESPN reports the typically reserved Tannehill temporarily stopped practice to show his displeasure with Ballage. Tannehill continued to get his point across to the rookie out of Arizona State a little later in practice, too. Ballage seemed receptive to Tannehill’s ribbing. It was unusual to see that from Tannehill, but the Dolphins may need that fiery leadership if they are to exceed expectations and push toward a playoff spot. Dolphins coach Adam Gase was happy with what Tannehill showed and said it was appropriate for him to react that way.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have suspended cornerback Jalen Ramsey and defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. for a week because of Fowler’s involvement in a post-practice altercation yesterday and Ramsey’s profane rant directed toward the media filming the incident. The team released a statement saying the two were suspended “for violating team rules and conduct unbecoming of a Jaguars football player.”
