Sheriff: Security upgrades needed at jail where 2 escaped
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A northern Nevada sheriff says security upgrades are in the works at the jail where two inmates recently escaped.
The inmates, 27-year-old Matthew Marizza and 29-year-old Cody Abernathy, were recaptured separately within days after escaping the evening of June 26 though an emergency exit in a loading dock area of the Carson City Jail.
Carson City Sheriff KenFurlong said the jail needs a new security system for gates that control movements throughout the facility and also that barbed wire should be added to brick walls surrounding the jail.
“The jail is roughly 25 years old. To our historical knowledge, this is the first time that something like this has happened,” Furlong told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
Authorities have said four people accused of aiding at least one of the escapees have been arrested in connection with the escape and three other people were being sought.
Marizza had been facing theft charges and Abernathy was jailed on drug and weapons charges.
