Murder suspect in Chelsea baseball bat attack nabbed in Ohio
An Everett resident who was brutally beaten with a baseball bat on a sidewalk in Chelsea earlier this month has died and a suspect has been captured in Ohio, authorities said.
Melvin Cortes, 32, succumbed to his injuries Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley.
Wark said the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and U.S. Marshals from Cincinnati yesterday arrested Kamaya Farifaki, 23, also of Everett.
Farifaki, who investigators have been hunting since shortly after the Feb. 5 assault on Cortes on Congress Avenue in Chelsea, is currently in custody in Ohio, where Wark said he will remain until an extradition hearing returns him to Massachusetts to face charges including murder.
