Cops shoot, wound driver after pursuit ends in fiery crash
EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) — Police shot and wounded a man following a vehicle pursuit that ended when the man’s car caught fire, authorities said.
The chase in East Cleveland began around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, when an officer spotted a car that apparently had been stolen. The pursuit soon ensued and continued until the car struck several undisclosed objects and caught fire, police said.
Two men and a woman then jumped out of the car, with one man and the woman running off in one direction while the driver ran behind some nearby houses and jumped over a fence and entered the property of a school, police said.
Officers who were chasing the driver said they fired several shots at him after he pulled out a gun, authorities said, though it’s not clear if he shot at the officers.. It also wasn’t immediately known how many shots were fire overall by the officers or how many times the man was shot. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery, but his name and further details on his injuries were not disclosed.
No officers were injured in the incident.
