Ted Strickland reveals his 2020 presidential pick -- if Sherrod Brown doesn’t run -- Ohio Matters podcast: Episode 33

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, already has a 2020 presidential candidate in mind.

“I can tell you who my choice is,” Strickland said on the latest episode of Ohio Matters. “It’s Gov. Jay Inslee, the governor of Washington state. He is one of my dearest friends. We shared an apartment for over 10 years in D.C. when we were both in the House. I talk to him every couple of weeks. I talked to him for a long time last night. He’s as decent as anyone I’ve ever met in my life.”

Ohio Matters is the weekly politics podcast from cleveland.com. Every week, political figures from around the state join reporters Andrew Tobias, Mary Kilpatrick and Seth Richardson for in-depth discussions on the Buckeye State.

Strickland, the only Democrat elected governor since 1990, served from 2007-2011. And while he said he likes Inslee in the 2020 contest, that does come with a caveat: what U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown decides to do.

“I haven’t heard anything from Sherrod that would indicate that (he is running for president),” Strickland said. “If he does become a candidate, that would change the equation obviously because we go way back and have been friends for many, many, many years.”

Besides sharing his thoughts on 2020, Strickland also talked about his Dickensian background in rural Southeast Ohio, his eclectic professional life as a minister and psychologist and his successes and failings in politics, including what it was like being governor in 2008 during the worst financial crisis in the United States since the Great Depression.

“I had to deal with the results of that recession,” Strickland said. “Every day I would go into my office and I would get the bad news: less tax revenue coming in. In order to keep the budget balanced, I had to make very tough decisions.”
