Shrum starts post as president of Oklahoma State University

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — The first woman chosen as president of Oklahoma State University is officially on the job.

Dr. Kayse Shrum’s first day in Stillwater was Thursday. Shrum had been president of the OSU Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa since 2013.

Enrollment at the medical school more than doubled during Shrum’s tenure, The Tulsa World reported.

“I’m very excited, but this is extremely humbling,” Shrum told the newspaper. “It’s a big day at Oklahoma State University and at the Shrum household.”

Among Shrum’s first duties as president: Announcing OSU’s new athletic director, Chad Weiberg. Weiberg had been deputy athletic director since 2017. He also started his new job Thursday.

The OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved Shrum’s appointment in April.

Shrum also is a former state secretary of science and innovation in Gov. Kevin Stitt’s cabinet and was part of Stitt’s COIVD-19 task force. Shrum succeeds Burns Hargis, who retired after 13 years as president.
