A limousine driver ran over and severely hurt a man who was trying to cross a well-traveled street in the middle of the night early Sunday northwest of the Twin Cities, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 2:20 a.m. on Hwy. 10 near 168th Street NW. in Big Lake, according to the State Patrol.

Daniel R. Martin, 29, of Zimmerman, was taken by air ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, the patrol said.

Martin’s injuries were initially considered life threatening. A hospital spokesman said late Sunday morning that Martin’s condition was upgraded to fair.

Robert T. Nowak, 47, of Big Lake, was heading west on Hwy. 10 when he struck Martin.

The patrol said Nowak was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Whether Martin had been drinking at the time was “unknown,” noted a synopsis of the crash by the patrol.
