Mad Ants can’t capitalize on big performances
Rookie Rob Gray had a career-best 35 points and Edmond Sumner scored 33 points : two short of his career high : but it wasn’t enough to help the short-handed Mad Ants on Wednesday night.
They lost 135-123 to the Erie BayHawks in front of an announced crowd of 1,243 at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania.
It was Fort Wayne’s third straight loss.
With the Indiana Pacers’ Victor Oladipo going down with a knee injury Wednesday, Sumner, a second-year player, could be headed back to the NBA team as he spent significant time with them this season when Oladipo was hurt previously.
The Mad Ants (14-14) played without Alize Johnson, Davon Reed and Stephan Hicks, who were all with the Pacers. Jordan Barnett and Ike Nwamu, acquired in a Monday trade from the Wisconsin Herd, weren’t yet in the lineup.
However, Ike Anigbogu was back from his knee injury and totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds for Fort Wayne.
Gray made 15 of 28 shots. Sumner was 11 of 19. Omari Johnson totaled 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Erie (15-12) was paced by Jaylen Adams’ 40 points and Terrence Jones’ 30.
