Port Arthur hires Melvin to lead police department
The next police chief in Port Arthur was hired Thursday by the City Council, but he will be labeled as an administrator until he is licensed by the state.
Patrick Melvin comes from Arizona, where he spent more than 30 years in law enforcement.The City Council’s vote Thursday was unanimous (Councilman Morris Albright III was absent for the vote).
Melvin is scheduled to start Oct. 11, though city manager Brian McDougal said the date could change.
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement requires Port Arthur to file an application for the appropriate license with the commission.
Dressed in a blue suit and tie, Melvin was present at the City Council meeting with his wife, Rhonda.Melvin’s Port Arthur salary will be close to $123,000, about 3 percent more than his predecessor Mark Blanton, who retired earlier this year making just over $119,000.
