Police fatally shoot man firing gunshots in wooded area

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee police officer fatally shot an armed man who was firing gunshots in a wooded area near a roadway Thursday morning, officials said.

Metro Nashville officers responded to the scene after a citizen reported an abandoned car with its doors open and gunfire nearby, police spokesman Don Aaron told news outlets.

Officers directed the man to stop shooting and come out of the wooded area, Aaron said. The man fired several shots, emerged shouting expletives and then fired two more shots, he said. Officer Ricardo Cruz returned fire and fatally wounded the man, he said.

No officers were injured. Police have not confirmed the identity of the man killed.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it would investigate.
