Inmate pleads guilty to lower charge, removed from death row

HAMILTON, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama inmate could be eligible for release in the future after pleading guilty to a lesser charge in a fatal robbery case.

Christopher Dewayne Revis, 42, pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder and was resentenced to life with the possibility of parole in the February 2004 death of Jerry Stidham, AL.Com reported.

Revis had been on death row since 2006 but will now serve his sentence with the general prison population.

A judge ordered a retrial in 2015 after finding out that two jurors during the original 2006 trial discussed testimony while eating lunch, which violated the judge’s orders.

The judge also ordered a retrial because Revis’ lawyers should have introduced more evidence during the sentencing phase, including information on Revis’ pain pill addiction.

Revis’ retrial was set for Oct. 26.

Revis, his brother Jason and his uncle Eddie were all convicted in Stidham’s death. Jason Revis is serving a life sentince and Eddie Revis died in prison while seriving a life sentence without parole.

The three were trying to rob Stidham of money and drugs. Court documents said Christopher Revis shot Stidham before Eddie Revis cut his throat.
