May 9, 2018 GMT

Sheldon clinched the Southwest Conference boys lacrosse title on Tuesday, scoring the deciding goal with just over a minute left to beat Roseburg, 7-6, at Finlay Field.

The Irish (9-2, 8-0 SWC) and Indians (7-5, 5-3) were tied 4-4 at halftime. The loss dropped Roseburg into a three-way tie for second with Churchill (8-7, 5-3) and Thurston (6-7, 5-3).

“It was a tough one to lose, but our guys played awesome,” said RHS coach Dave Heverly. “It was a well-played match at both ends.”

Scott Harvey had two goals and one assist for the Indians, who played without all-conference midfielder Tanner Reber (ruptured spleen).

Isaac Allen added two goals for Roseburg. Austin Roark scored one goal, while Brady Sanders chipped in one goal and one assist. Senior goalkeeper Ethan Dirksen made nine saves.

Heverly was pleased with the defense, mentioning Kale Lanza, Eli Norris and Cayden Gingery.

Sheldon goalie Noah Hatfield stopped eight shots on goal. Roseburg had a 27-17 edge in groundballs.

Roseburg plays at Churchill Friday, hosts Mountain View of Bend Saturday in a nonleague contest and ends the regular season next Tuesday against North Eugene at home.
