Local author to discuss tonight how women took over Yoncalla government in 1920

In 1920, a group of women took over the city council in Yoncalla. Local author Shannon Applegate will talk about what the Oregonian at the time called the “Sex Uprising in Yoncalla” at 7 p.m. today at the Douglas County Library, 1409 N.E. Diamond Lake Blvd., Roseburg.

Some of Applegate’s relatives were involved on both sides of the issue, which made national news at the time including a story in the New York Times.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
