Pedestrian struck during vehicle pursuit in San Diego
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The driver of a stolen vehicle being pursued through San Diego apparently deliberately struck a pedestrian before being taken into custody, police said.
The pedestrian was hospitalized Sunday with life-threatening injuries, a San Diego Police Department statement said.
The pursuit began in Chula Vista, where the stolen vehicle had crashed into a building. Chula Vista police requested assistance as the chase entered San Diego.
The vehicle drove into a trailer park and stopped, but then accelerated and struck the pedestrian.
“It appears as though the collision with the pedestrian was intentional,” the statement said.
The driver sped away but was taken into custody around a corner with the help of a police dog.
The driver was identified only as a 44-year-old man. His name was withheld.
The injured pedestrian was identified as a 52-year-old resident of the trailer park. His name also was withheld.
Homicide detectives were called in to investigate due to the severity of the victim’s injuries, police said.
