Officials: Speeding car crashes into Florida fire station
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man was critically injured when he crashed his car into a Tampa Bay area fire station, officials said.
The crash occurred Sunday morning in Manatee County, the Bradenton Herald reported.
The 41-year-old driver was speeding as he approached a curve in the road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The sedan left the roadway, ramped off a concrete culvert and went airborne, FHP said. The car then hit a palm tree before crashing into the roof and side wall of the Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue station.
No one inside of the station was injured, Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue Chief Brian Gorsky said. Paramedics from the station immediately helped the driver, who was taken to a Sarasota trauma center.
Fire officials said damage to the station was significant, but inspectors deemed the structure safe to continue using.
