WNAC awarding $1,000 scholarship
SCOTTSBLUFF — The Barbara Fliesbach McAlister scholarship is awarding one $1,000 to high school seniors or current junior college students planning to study art at a higher college in the near future. The applicant must be a resident of western Nebraska or eastern Wyoming. The scholarship may be used at any junior college, four year college, university or trade school with an accredited art department.
Application forms are available at West Nebraska Arts Center, 106 E. 18th St. in Scottsbluff or online at www.thewnac.com. Applications must be postmarked on or before Monday, April 2, 2018. The decision will be made by committee at WNAC and notification of the winner will be made on or before Friday. April 27, 2018. “I am honored once again to be working with the G.A. Fliesbach Foundation (through Oregon Trail Community Foundation) to find a recipient for this special scholarship. The Fliesbachs are long-time and generous supporters of West Nebraska Arts Center and our community,” said Thompson.
Barbara Fliesbach McAlister was born in Nevada in 1918. She grew up in Scottsbluff, Nebraska being raised by her aunt and uncle, Harry and Grace Weybright Fliesbach. She attended Pasadena City College, majoring in art. She also studied ballet and performed in several productions. Barbara was a gifted artist and studied watercolors with Milford Zornes, well-known watercolorist and teacher. After Barbara’s passing in 2015, her family wished to start a scholarship fund for students interested in pursuing higher education in the arts as a way to honor her memory.
