Annual garden walk showcases nature, theater

SCOTTSBLUFF — Theatre West’s annual Garden Walk is set for June 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. and features six area gardens in Morrill, Scottsbluff and Gering. The 27th annual fundraiser will allow participants to go on self-guided tours through creative and beautiful gardens filled with flowers, trees, shrubs and water features.

“It’s a big event in the summer and is something a lot of people look forward to,” said Mary Winn, chairman of the Garden Walk Committee. “It’s a really great community activity and another way in getting people interested in the theatrical productions, which is what we’re really all about.”

This year, the committee decided to have the walk in June, so people can have a chance to implement some of the plants and design themes in their gardens.

Along with preparations for the annual Garden Walk, the committee also asks Gering High School students to draw a design for promotions. Students are asked to keep the design to one sketchbook page and keep the shading and details to a minimum as they don’t print well.

“Every year we need a design, so this is the fourth year I’ve called upon Ryan Bosche and his art students to come up with decisions for us,” said Winn.

Winn visited with the students early in the spring about what they were looking for and once the pieces were submitted, the committee decided which one would be featured on the booklet and T-shirt. The eight-member committee looked at the artwork from various distances before selecting the winning design.

“We have a Garden Walk committee,” said Winn. “We don’t want them all to look the same, so we look for something a little bit out of the ordinary and different than what we’ve had before.”

Winn said the committee appreciates the students’ creativity and quality designs.

Addison Weinmaster’s design was selected as the winning design for the 2019 event.

“I was really surprised and wasn’t expecting it,” said Weinmaster. “My mom was proud and happy.”

Weinmaster said the hardest part about the design was choosing the flowers to include in the design.

“I wanted to include a flower theme and insect in the garden,” said Weinmaster.

The walk will include gardens outside of Scottsbluff and Gering.

“The one yard in Morrill is just amazing. It has everything you can think of,” said Winn.

When there is a location further away from the others, Winn said, “If we have one that’s a little bit of a distance, we try to have a second one.”

The Morrill garden is unique as Tony and Courtney Schuler have designed their garden around their residence and share a vegetable garden with Tony’s mother Julie Schuler.

“That should be really nice,” said Winn.

Tickets purchased in advance are $15. Tickets can be purchased at the Theatre West box office, from Theatre West board members, Gering Garden Center, ABC Nursery, Compliments and the Mixing Bowl.

Tickets can also be purchased the day of the Garden Walk for $18.

The Garden Walk is sponsored by Theatre West and the event is a major fundraiser to help bring in theater productions to the area.
