Man gets 40 years for killing boy while shooting at his mom
NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) — A man who shot and killed a 7-year-old boy as the child’s mother tried to flee their home has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
X’Zavier Sharif Davis, 28, was found guilty of murder, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and a weapons violation Thursday by a Newberry County jury, the Eighth Circuit Solicitor’s Office said in a news release.
Davis came home drunk to his estranged girlfriend’s house one night in April 2019, broke a window and entered the home, prosecutors said.
Davis fired a gun in the air as the woman grabbed her three children and ran out the back door, investigators said. He then got a second weapon and fired eight shots into the woman’s car as she tried to drive away, prosecutors said.
Iven Caldwell, 7, was struck in the head and killed, while his mother was hit in the leg, authorities said.
A 3-year-old girl and 10-month-old boy in the car were not injured, police said.
Davis was sentenced to 35 years for murder and five years on the weapons charge to be served consecutively. He was sentenced to 20 years on the assault charge to be served at the same time as the other counts.
